"This work was inspired by the banksia as an iconic symbol of resilience within the Australian landscape. I began collecting banksia pods, recording their shapes and unique form. Each plant was strange and unpredictable, the tiny pods I affiliated with a small, hidden sanctuary. Through drawing and painting, I initially recorded their quality, before sculpting each form. I am drawn to the way the banksia regenerates after the most destructive bushfires. Similarly, the ceramic vessel begins as a weak clay body, fired to extreme temperatures in order to become strong and durable. Depicting the Australian landscape, I am concerned with themes of trauma and resilience within our landscape and the role we play in its preservation." - Lisa Carrett
